About Maple Story

Maple Story is a 2 Dimensional MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). In this game, you fight a variety of monsters to gain experience and become stronger so you can kill stronger monsters. Sound like fun? Well to start playing this game, you must register an account here: www.mapleglobal.com
After you're finished registering, download the game from the same site (170mb file).
Now that you're all set-up, you should decide what class you want to become. Your choices are: Warrior, Bowman, Magician, Thief.

Starting Out

You want to become that arse-kicking, sword wielding warrior right? For starters, create a character with 4 INT and 4 LUK for a "perfect" warrior. If you're too lazy to get to 4/4, then get 4/5 or 5/4 or 5/5. It doesn't matter what your STR and DEX are at the moment so just focus on INT and LUK for now. As for stat distribution, put your STR up to 35 and then put the rest of your AP (Ability Points) into DEX until level 10. NEVER put any points into any stats except STR and DEX. When you get to level 10, go to the top of Perion, talk to Sitting Bull and become a warrior!

Basics of a Warrior

Now let's talk about abilities for you warrior. There are 7 different abilities to choose from:

 HP Recovery
Master Level: 16
You recover more HP every 10 seconds while standing still.

My thoughts: This is a useless skill. When you are fighting, you do not want to stand around and recover HP. You should spend your money on potions for faster leveling. Just put points into this skill to unlock Improving Max HP Increase.

 Improving Max HP Increase
Master Level: 10
How to Unlock: 5 points in HP Recover

If AP is used on Max HP, it raises the level of increase for Max HP. It also increases the amount of HP you receive every level up.

My thoughts: This is the BEST skill for warriors. Put this skill up immediately. Everytime you level up, you gain more HP then normally. To have an efficient warrior, you must have a lot of HP to fight.
Note: The game words this move horribly. It makes it sound like you only gain more HP when you put an AP point into it. You also gain more HP everytime you level up.

 Endure
Master Level: 8
How to Unlock: 3 points in Improving Max HP Increase

You'll be able to recover HP while hanging on a rope or ladder.

My thoughts: See my thoughts on HP Recovery

 Iron Body
Master Level: 20
How to Unlock: 3 points in Endure.

Temporarily increases your weapon defense.

My thoughts: This is not a horrible skill, but there are better ways to spend your SP. At early levels, this skill is great. However, the maximum this skill can prevent in damage is 40. At early levels, when monsters hit you for 50+ damage, this skill is very useful. But later on monsters hit you for 400+ damage. 40 damage away from that is not helpful. This skill is only useful for earlier levels.

 Power Strike
Master Level: 20
Use MP to deliver a killer blow.

My Thoughts: This is a great skill. This allows you to attack monsters for 260% more damage for a low low cost of 12 MP. You won't be using this skill a lot earlier on because you'll have too little MP, but later on, you'll be using this skill as your main attack. Make sure to max Power Strike.

 Slash Blast
Master Level: 20
How to Unlock: 1 point in Power Strike

Use HP and MP to attack multiple enemies.

My Thoughts: This is decent skill. This is the only skill in the 1st job that can hit multiple enemies at once, so warriors have very good advantage in the 1st job. You will be using this skill less in the 2nd job advancement though. Max this skill if you like mass killing.

Now that you know the abilities, I'll help you with the distribution. There are 2 different ways that you can build you warrior.

Build A

HP Recovery: 5
Improving Max HP Increase: 10 MAX
Slash Blast or Power Strike: 10
Save 10 points
Slash Blast or Power Strike: 20 MAX
Slash Blast or Power Strike: 10
Save 10 points
Slash Blast or Power Strike: 20 MAX
Endure: 3
Iron Body: 1 *optional*
HP Recovery: 7 or 8 (if you don't want a point in Iron Body)

Build B

HP Recovery: 5
Improving Max HP Increase: 10 MAX
Slash Blast: 10
Power Strike: 10
Save 10 points
Power Strike: 20 MAX
Endure: 3
Iron Body: 10
HP Recovery: 7

What build you prefer is really up to you. Build A is for the warrior that loves to attack and doensn't care about how many potions he uses. Build B is for the warrior that likes to have some spare change. In my opinion, if you are going to become a page, you should go with Build A without Iron Body, Fighters should go Build A with the point in Iron Body, and Spearman should stick with Build B. If you don't know what 2nd job advancement you want to be, look below.

Stat Distribution

Here are the stats your warrior should have by the following level.
For 4/4 stats:
Level 10 - STR 50, DEX 12
Level 15 - STR 65, DEX 22
Level 20 - STR 70, DEX 42
Level 25 - STR 85, DEX 52
Level 30 - STR 100, DEX 62
Level 35 - STR 125, DEX 62
Level 40 - STR 150, DEX 62
Level 45 - STR 165, DEX 72
Level 50 - STR 180, DEX 82
Level 55 - STR 195, DEX 92
Level 60 - STR 210, DEX 102

This means that from level 10, put your STR up by 3 and your DEX by 2 every time you level until you get to level 30. After level thirty, you should put your STR up by 4 and your DEX by 1 every level. You could also put up entirely DEX for 2 levels and for the next 8 levels, put up STR. Either of these methods are fine, but once you get to level 70, 100 dex should be enough to hit anything you fight.

2nd Job Advancement

There are 3 different job advancements as I mentioned before. Fighter, Page, and Spearman. To become one of these advancements, first you must become level 30 and have at least 100 STR. Then you must talk to Sitting Bull and he'll tell you to talk to the 2nd Job Instructor. The 2nd Job Instructor is located in West Rocky Mountains V (go 2 screens left from Perion and go through the top portals to get there). The job instructor will then take you to the testing grounds and tell you to collect 30 dark marbles. To get these orbs, you must defeat several fire boars and lupins. Don't worry though, they are not as strong as the real monsters. However, even though they are weakened, the lupins are still very strong, so I suggest you stick to fighting fire boars. When you get the 30 marbles, talk to the job instructor and he'll give you the item "Proof of a Hero" to give to Sitting Bull. Once you give them to him, you get to choose which class you want to be.
Now I'll help you decide what class you want to be.

Fighter

Advantages:

  • Uses swords and axes
  • Swords are fast and have consistant damage
  • Can use a shield
  • Axes are cheap and have a strong slash
  • Strongest physical attacker
  • Has extra defense from Power Guard
  • Can inflict status to enemies in 3rd job
  • Advancing to Fighter gives more HP, so they have the most inital HP in the game

Disadvantages:
  • Swords are expensive
  • Shields don't protect you from that much damage
  • Axes are slow and do less damage when stabbing
  • Attacks aren't very fancy

Page

Advantages:

  • Elemental attacks in 3rd job advancement (Knight)
  • Uses swords and maces
  • Both weapons are fast
  • Swords have consistant damage
  • Can use a shield
  • Has extra defense from Power Guard
  • Balanced distribution of HP and MP advancing to Page

Disadvantages:
  • Elemental attacks force them to train in 1 spot until all elemental skills are maxed
  • Swords are expensive
  • Maces do less damage when stabbing
  • Shields don't protect you from that much damage

Spearman

Advantages:

  • Uses spears and polearms
  • Polearms have a stronger slash
  • Spears have a stronger stab
  • Weapons have long reach
  • Fancy 3rd job skills
  • Strongest raw attack
  • Many multi-hit moves in 3rd job
  • Hyper Body allows them to have much more HP and MP
  • Since advancing to Spearman gives you more MP, they have the most MP out of all the warriors

Disadvantages:
  • Spears and Polearms are slow
  • Spears do less damage when slashing
  • Polearms do less damage when stabbing
  • Hardest class to use
  • Very big range between minimum and maximum damage
  • Lower defense than Page and Fighter because they have no Power Guard

Way of the Fighter

 Sword Mastery
Master Level: 20
Increases the sword mastery and accuracy. It only applies when either a one-handed or a two-handed sword is in hand.

My Thoughts: This ability is a must for all Sword Fighters since warriors have the worst accuracy in the game, this helps a lot. What this ability does is lower the minimum damage your attacks do. Eg. Your max attack is 100 and you have 10% mastery, you can't do lower than 10 damage to an enemy (ignoring defense). Everytime you level this skill to an odd number such as 3 or 5, it puts up mastery % and everytime you level this skill to an even number such as 2 or 4, it puts up accuracy. So you should leave this skill at 19 because 1 extra accuracy isn't going to help too much. Put this skill up first if you plan to be a Sword Fighter since it only works with swords.

 Axe Mastery
Master Level: 20
Increases the axe mastery and accuracy. It only applies when either a one-handed or a two-handed axe is in hand.

My Thoughts: See My thoughts Sword Mastery except replace the word "sword" with "axe".

 Final Attack: Sword
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Sword Mastery

With a certain success rate, another attack follows after performing an attacking skill. Only works with a one-handed or a two-handed sword in hand.

My Thoughts: This is another great ability for the Sword Fighter. At lower levels it isn't that great, but once you level it to a 40% success rate, it's a free Power Strike. This also works with Slash Blast, but it isn't as effective as Power Strike since the damage spreads through the enemies. Another nice feature about this skill is that it looks pretty cool when you use it. Put this skill up after Sword Mastery.

 Final Attack: Axe
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Axe Mastery

With a certain success rate, another attack follows after performing an attacking skill. Only works with a one-handed or a two-handed axe in hand.

My Thoughts: See Final Attack: Sword for my thoughts on this skill. Just replace the word "sword" with "axe".

 Sword Booster
Master Level: 20
How to Unlock: 5 points in Sword Mastery

Uses HP and MP to temporarily boost up the attacking speed of the equipped sword. It only applies when either a one-handed or a two-handed sword is in hand.

My Thoughts: I love this skill. The extra speed you get will help you kill a lot faster than before. Once you get this skill, you'll never be able to fight without it again. Putting more points into booster will not increase the speed of your weapons. A level 1 booster is the same as a maxed booster in speed. Putting points into booster will make it last longer and decrease the HP/MP cost. Put this skill up by 5 after Final Attack.

 Axe Booster
Master Level: 20
How to Unlock: 5 points in Axe Mastery

Uses HP and MP to temporarily boost up the attacking speed of the equipped axe. It only applies when either a one-handed or a two-handed axe is in hand.

My Thoughts: See My Thoughts on Sword Booster.

 Fury
Master Level: 20
Temporarily boosts the weapon attack level of everyone in the party around the area, but also decreases the level of weapon attack defense.

My Thoughts: Yet another good Fighter skill. Many people think that 1 weapon attack means that you will be doing 1 more damage than you normally would, but that is wrong. Putting up weapon attack will increase your attack to much higher levels especially if you use Power Strike as your main attack. Your assassin, warrior, and hunter friends will definately like this skill. Mages won't like this skill for obvious reasons. The decrease in weapon defense is not very noticable, so this makes this an overall good skill. Choose this skill or Power Guard after booster.

 Power Guard
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Fury

Returns a portion of the damage received from the enemy. Can't return more than 10% of the enemy's Max HP at once, however.

My Thoughts: The final ownage move for the Fighter. This move really kicks ass. What this move does is block 40% of the enemies damage and REFLECT it back at them. This means that if something normally does 100 damage to you, you would only take 60 damage and the enemy takes 40. The only problem with this move is that it takes a very long time for it to get useful since it maxes out at 30. Choose this skill or Fury after booster.

Now for distribution:

Build A
Sword/Axe Mastery: 19
Final Attack Sword/Axe: 30 MAX
Sword/Axe Booster: 5
Fury: 20 MAX
Power Guard: 30 MAX
Sword/Axe Booster: 20 MAX
Sword/Axe Mastery: 20 MAX

Build B
Sword/Axe Mastery: 19
Final Attack Sword/Axe: 30 MAX
Sword/Axe Booster: 5
Fury: 3
Power Guard: 30 MAX
Fury: 20 MAX
Sword/Axe Booster: 20 MAX
Sword/Axe Mastery: 20 MAX

Whichever build you choose, you'll end up with the same result. Just choose which skill you find more useful (Fury or Power Guard) to decide which build to use.

Way of the Page

 Sword Mastery
Master Level: 20
Increases the sword mastery and accuracy. It only applies when either a one-handed or a two-handed sword is in hand.

My Thoughts: This ability is a must for all Sword Pages since warriors have the worst accuracy in the game, this helps a lot. Put this skill up first if you plan to be a Sword Page since it only works with swords.

 Mace Mastery
Master Level: 20
Increases the mace mastery and accuracy. It only applies when either a one-handed or a two-handed mace is in hand.

My Thoughts: See My thoughts Sword Mastery except replace the word "sword" with "mace".

 Final Attack: Sword
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Sword Mastery

With a certain success rate, another attack follows after performing an attacking skill. Only works with a one-handed or a two-handed sword in hand.

My Thoughts: This is another great ability for the Sword Page.

 Final Attack: Mace
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Mace Mastery

With a certain success rate, another attack follows after performing an attacking skill. Only works with a one-handed or a two-handed mace in hand.

My Thoughts: See Final Attack: Sword for my thoughts on this skill. Just replace the word "sword" with "mace".

 Mace Booster
Master Level: 20
How to Unlock: 5 points in Mace Mastery

Uses HP and MP to temporarily boost up the attacking speed of the equipped mace. It only applies when either a one-handed or a two-handed mace is in hand.

My Thoughts: See My Thoughts on Sword Booster.

 Threaten
Master Level: 20
Use MP to temporarily theaten an enemy. Decreases the level of weapon attack and weapon defense of every enemy around the area.

My Thoughts: When you use this skill, a giant ghost pops up and every enemy around you will have lower attack and defense. Not that useful since you will have to reuse this move again and again. This move is best used on powerful enemies that you don't kill in 2-3 hits. It's not the best attack, but it's the first magic attack pages get. I suggest you put this up last, just put the initial 3 to unlock Power Guard.

 Power Guard
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Threaten

Returns a portion of the damage received from the enemy. Can't return more than 10% of the enemy's Max HP at once, however.

My Thoughts: The final ownage move for the Page. This move really kicks ass. What this move does is block 40% of the enemies damage and REFLECT it back at them. This means that if something normally does 100 damage to you, you would only take 60 damage and the enemy would take 40. The only problem with this move is that it takes a very long time for it to get useful since it maxes out at 30. Max this skill after booster.

Now for distribution:

Sword/Mace Mastery: 19
Final Attack Sword/Mace: 30 MAX
Sword/Mace Booster: 5
Threaten: 3
Power Guard: 30 MAX
Sword/Mace Booster: 20 MAX
Sword/Axe Mastery: 20 MAX
Threaten: 20 MAX

I'm not a Page, but this is my guess on how you should distribute stats. This is mostly based on my Fighter experience, so I'm not sure if this is the best way to go. If you disagree with my distribution then contact me and provide your thoughts.

Way of the Spearman

 Spear Mastery
Master Level: 20
Increases the spear mastery and accuracy. It only applies when a spear is in hand.

My Thoughts: This ability is a must for all spear-using Spearmen since warriors have the worst accuracy in the game, this helps a lot. Put this skill up first if you plan to be a spear-using Spearman since it only works with spears.

 Polearm Mastery
Master Level: 20
Increases the polearm mastery and accuracy. It only applies when a polearm is in hand.

My Thoughts: See My thoughts Spear Mastery except replace the word "spear" with "polearm".

 Final Attack: Spear
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Spear Mastery

With a certain success rate, another attack follows after performing an attacking skill. Only works with a spear in hand.

My Thoughts: This is another great ability for the spear-using Spearman. Put this skill up after Spear Mastery.

 Final Attack: Polearm
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Polearm Mastery

With a certain success rate, another attack follows after performing an attacking skill. Only works with a polearm in hand.

My Thoughts: See Final Attack: Spear for my thoughts on this skill. Just replace the word "spear" with "polearm".

 Spear Booster
Master Level: 20
How to Unlock: 5 points in Spear Mastery

Uses HP and MP to temporarily boost up the attacking speed of the equipped spear. It only applies when a spear is in hand.

Since the weapons Spearmen use are slow, they need this skill a lot more than the other classes. Put this skill up by 5 after Spear Mastery.

 Polearm Booster
Master Level: 20
How to Unlock: 5 points in Polearm Mastery

Uses HP and MP to temporarily boost up the attacking speed of the equipped polearm. It only applies when a polearm is in hand.

My Thoughts: See My Thoughts on Spear Booster.

 Iron Wall
Master Level: 20
Temporarily increases the level of weapon and magic defense on every member of the party around the area.

My Thoughts: This skill makes a huge wall appear in front of you and all your party members close to you to increase their weapon and magic defense. This is not a great move. This is pretty much the same thing as the Iron Body skill that all warriors get except it puts less weapon defense and some magic defense. Choose between Iron Body and Iron Wall.

 Hyper Body
Master Level: 30
How to Unlock: 3 points in Iron Wall

Temporarily increases the Max HP and Max MP of all members of the party around the area.

My Thoughts: This is the move that Spearmen are famous for. Everybody loves this move. When maxed out, it raises all your party member's HP and MP by 60% for 300 seconds. This move is also awesome with clerics since their Heal is based on how much HP they have. A downside to this move is that you have to refill the extra HP and MP you gain by yourself. Max this skill after Final Attack.

Now for distribution:

Build A
Spear/Polearm Mastery: 19
Spear/Polearm Booster: 5
Final Attack Spear/Polearm: 30 MAX
Iron Wall: 3
Hyper Body: 30 MAX
Spear/Polearm Booster: 20 MAX
Spear/Polearm Mastery: 20 MAX
Iron Body: 20 MAX (The 1st job advancement skill)

Build A
Spear/Polearm Mastery: 19
Spear/Polearm Booster: 5
Final Attack Spear/Polearm: 30 MAX
Iron Wall: 3
Hyper Body: 30 MAX
Spear/Polearm Booster: 20 MAX
Spear/Polearm Mastery: 20 MAX
Iron Wall: 20 MAX

Build A is for those Spearmen that want Iron Body for that extra physical defense and Build B is for those Spearmen who prefer a party skill. I'm not a Spearman, but this is my guess on how you should distribute stats. This is mostly based on my Fighter experience, so I'm not sure if this is the best way to go. If you disagree with my distribution then contact me and provide your thoughts.
